            主 講:英國Newcastle University Tony Clare教授

            地 點:周隆泉樓B3-202

            教授簡介:

Tony Clare is Professor of Marine Science and Director of Research in the School of Marine Science & Technology.  He is also Coordinator of the research network, marineNewcastle, which promotes interdisciplinary marine and maritime research across the University.  Tonys research focuses on marine biofouling and adhesion.  He participates in major international research programmes and works closely with industry with the aim of finding environmentally benign solutions to fouling.  He has published 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering and serves on the Editorial Board of Biofouling.

            講座簡介:

Minimising the impact of global shipping on the Ocean is a major scientific and technological challenge. Marine biofouling costs the shipping industry an estimated US$6 billion annually. It also contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. 384 million tonnes CO2) and threatens marine biodiversity through the translocation of invasive species.  Efforts to replace biocides for fouling control with more environmentally benign solutions have highlighted the need for a better understanding of how organisms colonise surfaces.  This lecture will highlight recent advances in our knowledge of the fouling process and new lines of enquiry for sustainable fouling control with reference to a major fouling animal the barnacle.
